I do not know what my problem was yesterday, but every time I had a moment to myself I felt like crying. Perhaps it was due to the stress and worry I had been feeling for my mom leading up to and during her surgery. Whatever the cause, I chose what I felt would be in my best interest and took work off for the evening.
I explained to my boss that it was for my 'mental health' and she totally understood! She did not want to see me break out in tears if a student had a problem while I was working with them! All of us need that time to ourselves to de-stress and relax.
I have always considered myself to be a strong person emotionally, but after numerous counselling sessions I came to realize that I matter. We cannot always be everything for everyone else without looking after ourselves first. Yesterday I needed to take that time for myself and do what was best for me.
I played with my son at the park, sat outside with a book and watched a hockey game. This may not sound like much for some of you, but for me it did wonders! I was also able to enjoy cooking supper and eating it as a family with my children which I do not get to do every night because of the hours I work.
All it took were those simple activities that I enjoy to help clear my head and heart allowing me to feel that I would be able to take on the world again the next day. We should never be afraid to say, "You know what, I am important and today I am going to make sure I get looked after". We all need those moments whether it takes a few hours, a day, or a week to stop and look after ourselves.
If you feel that you also need a 'Mental Health' day I say go for it and enjoy!
Thought of the day : Why isn't there mouse flavoured cat food?
