The recipe I use is nothing fancy, it does not require oodles of time spent on icing it, in fact it is best right out of the oven with some butter on it! I use the same recipe that my mom uses so some of you reading this are probably familiar with the recipe already. That is ok, maybe reading this will inspire you to whip out the mix master and make yourself a cake!
I used this recipe a week ago for Stephen's (boyfriend) birthday and did not have on hand the ingredients to make chocolate icing. I decided to phone a friend (mommy) and she provided me with the instructions on how to make brown sugar icing. The cake was delicious, even my babysitter commented on how good it was. I think Stephen was happy with it as well when he finally was able to get to a piece! Enjoy!
2 cups white sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
4-5 Tbsp. cocoa
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sour milk (regular milk with 2 Tbsp. vinegar added to it)
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix ingredients until smooth and pour into square or round baking sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees F for 20-25min.
Interesting Tidbit: There are five basic types of cake, depending on the substance used for leavening. People started making cake shortly after flour was discovered. The wealthier you were, the more likely you would consume cake frequently. http://whatscookingamerica.net
