Here in Alberta we celebrate Family Day on the third Monday of every February. We first celebrated this holiday back in 1990. The holiday was started by then Premier Don Getty, who thought Albertans needed to take time for their families and to strengthen family values.
Whether you agree with Family Day being a holiday or not, I believe the premise behind it is terrific! In the 90's I was still in school, so back then I only enjoyed the holiday because I got to miss a day off of school. My values have changed slightly as I have matured (ha ha). Since having my own family I have found it important to celebrate this holiday and stress to my kids how important family is!
Some people use this holiday to plan trips to Disneyland, Florida, Mexico etc., but I do not think it really matters where you go just as long as you take some time on Monday for your family. These are things we should do each and every day but realistically I know it is not always that simple. Work, sports, lessons and clubs all make life hectic and it is easy to forget to stop and make sure we spend that quality time with those that matter most!
The day does not have to be an elaborate, planned out hour by hour affair. It could be simply going swimming or skating at the local swimming pool or rink. Going for a walk/nature hike, ice fishing, baking cookies, playing a board game.........whatever you and your family enjoy doing together are all examples of things one can do with their family. Just taking that time to do something TOGETHER is what matters most.
